Summer Cooling Program

This statewide program which begins June 1 and ends August 31. It is designed to help families through the summer by providing cash assistance towards their electric bill or by providing an air conditioner or box fans. The cash assistance amount varies depending on funding and is paid directly to the family’s electric company. This is designed to help with high electric bills due to running an air conditioning unit. To qualify, families must be income eligible and have an “at risk” household member (elderly, disabled, or child under age 6). To receive an air conditioner, families must be income eligible, have an “at risk” household member, AND have a verified medical requirement for an air conditioner. The medical requirement must come directly from a physician. Families can only receive one air conditioner each 5 years through this program. The number of air conditioners are limited and are distributed on a first-come-first-served basis. To receive a box fan families need only be income eligible. Income eligibility is 150% of the poverty guidelines which will be updated prior to the June 1st start-up date. Contact your local Community Action Program, Inc. of Western Indiana office location.
